WHICH BIN TIPS

No Clothing in the Green Bin! Clothing is not compostable.

Usually the phrase ‘if it grows, it can go’ applies for anything that can be added to your green bin but with any great rule there are always a few exceptions. One of those exceptions is wool!

Although human hair, pet hair and fluff is compostable, Sheep’s wool is unlike a regular coat. As it is so dense, it takes longer than regular compostable material to break down.

Commercial composting has certain conditions and time frames to adhere to and for some items they don’t make the cut. This also includes natural rubber.

The good news is that if you have a home compost, you can cut up the wool into smaller chunks and mix it in. Just be aware that it can take quite a few months to break down. Wool can be especially useful in gardening, as it has the ability to retain water while releasing nutrients.

Check that it is 100% natural with no synthetics to keep your compost and garden happy.
